NWSCT Newsletter January 2009

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!!

It’s been a couple of months since our last newsletter so here is a quick recap of our recent meetings.
Our November meeting was held at Valspar where our featured speaker was Josh Mathes of Southern Clay Products. He presented his talk "Smart Rheology" which everyone found to be very informative. A special thank you goes to Valspar for hosting this meeting and providing beverages.
Our December meeting was held at Jax Cafe where our featured speaker was T. Howard Killiea of Valspar. He talked about "Yellow to Green: The Transition from Egg Yolk Tempura Paint to Low Emission Coatings.” This was an interesting look at the history of coatings and environmental regulations. There were approximately 20 people in attendance for this presentation.

Our next meeting is a lunch meeting at HB Fuller in Vadnais Heights (HB Fuller Headquarters/R&D Facility 1200 Willow Lake Boulevard, Vadnais Heights). Please RSVP to Bonnie Gauderman at 651-236-5850 or bonnie.gauderman@hbfuller.com by January 9, 2009. The cost of the lunch will be $20. This talk will feature Paul Hoffman of Bayer MaterialScience, LLC. Paul’s topic will be "Polyaspartic Coatings: The Key to Higher Productivity and Lower VOCs." Polyaspartic coatings have been known to the marketplace for more than 15 years. Typical of conventional two-component coatings cured with aliphatic polyisocyanates, they provide end users with excellent durability properties and a chance to improve the “bottom line” through productivity and higher throughput. This talk will detail the general application areas of corrosion resistant coatings and concrete flooring finishes. General physical property data will be presented as well as marketing data and case histories. Paul Hoffman has been a member of the Paint and Coatings Industry for more than 40 years. Paul started his career with the Celanese Coatings Co. in Detroit, Michigan formulating and testing OEM automotive coatings, and worked for Harrison Paint and Akron Paint in Ohio. In those 17 years in the production side of the industry, Paul held a variety of technical, operations and management positions. For the last 23 years he has the served as the Coatings Technical Manager for Bayer’s national Distributor network.
