NWSCT January 2010 Newsletter Our January meeting will be on Tuesday January 12th from 11:30 to 1:30 at Valspar R&D (312 South 11th Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55415). The cost of this meeting will be $15 per person if paid on our website http://www.nwsct.org/ using PayPal by January 7th and $20 after that date. Please contact Elaine Anderson (elaine@commerceindustrialchemicals.com) if you are going to attend the meeting and you are not going to pay via PayPal as we need a head count for lunch. The talk will feature Mike Dvorchak, Strategic Technology Manager, UV Cure Oligomers and PUDs Bayer MaterialScience LLC. The topic of his talk will be "UV Cure Coatings Technology; new markets, new oligomers and new waterbased polyurethane dispersions." Ultraviolet (UV) curable coatings have experienced a 7-8 % growth in many coatings markets. It has become the current choice of formulators who are trying to meet the needs of government mandated VOCs and HAPs. Also the price of natural gas has led to a greater interest in UV technology due to the high cost of heating heavy substrates to cure and dry the conventional coatings. Bayer MaterialScience LLC has been at the forefront in the development of UV cure systems including 100% solids, dual cure and polyurethane dispersion technologies. The presentation will spell out some of the new and unique areas that UV technologies are having their greatest thrust into the current coatings markets. The new market thrust areas will include: UV A composite repair, DTM applications, UV elastomers, UV A automotive clear coats and primers, UV A aerospace coatings, UV PUDs for plastic hard coats and soft touch applications. In addition, new UV A LED and fluorescent UV A light sources will be discussed. Mike Dvorchak began his career with Mobay Corp. in 1985 as a Development Chemist specializing in bis-oxalzolidine chemistries and eventually progressed to Manager of Technology for wood coatings. He was then named as Technology Manager in general product finishing where he focused on 1K, 2K solvent/water polyurethanes (ultra low VOC polyurethane dispersions) both blocked and conventional cure routes. In January 2000, Mike became Marketing Manager for FWAs and Chemicals for the Bayer Paper Chemicals Group. In 2002 he returned to CAS and led the re-launch of the UV cure technology for Bayer MaterialScience LLC. In 2006 Mike was named to Technology Platform UV Lead, New Applications Lead, CAS Distribution Technology Lead and CAS Government Programs Lead. Mike has received nine patents, written over 14 peer reviewed papers, and was a course instructor for polyurethane dispersions, polyurethane chemistry and spray application at the ICE Conference and High Solids Waterborne Conferences. He has also taught using VLC (Virtual Learning Courses) through FSCT where he has presented on UV Cure and Polyurethane chemistries using this unique teaching tool. In addition Mike teaches the UV Cure session for the CalPoly Coatings Short Course and American Coatings Conference Pre-Conference Tutorial on UV Cure Coatings. He has received the prestigious US Presidential Green Chemistry Award for work that was done on the ultra low VOC, HAPS 2K Water Polyurethanes that were developed for the wood coatings market. Mike has been on the Board of Directors of RADTECH NA since Jan 2005. After the luncheon and talk we will vote on the By-laws. The proposed changes to the NWSCT by-laws are posted on the NWSCT website (http://www.nwsct.org/by-laws.php). Please carefully review the proposed by-laws as they will be will be voted on at the January meeting. The only way you will be able to vote on the proposed by-laws is if you are a member in good standing and by attending the January meeting in person. Thank you very much for your cooperation and participation.
