NWSCT Newsletter March 2009

It's finally starting to look a little like Spring outside and everyone will be able to start practicing for the NWSCT Spring Golf Outing before you know it!  Here is a recap of the most recent society events.

Our March meeting was held at Jax Cafe in Minneapolis where our featured speaker was Andrew Balgeman of HALOX.  Andrew's topic was "SOL-GEL CORROSION INHIBITORS."  This talk gave us all valuable information about an environmentally friendly alternative to the use of heavy metals or Cr-based corrosion inhibitors.

Our next meeting will be Education night on April 14, 2009 at Jax Cafe in Minneapolis. This talk will feature Xiaodong Shi, a student at North Dakota State University.  His topic will be "Coating Service Lifetime Prediction."  Relating product service lifetime to material composition by using standardized, artificial exposures, or even natural exposure, is notoriously difficult.  NDSU has developed an approach for service lifetime prediction that incorporates very basic phenomena into calculations of damage accumulation during weathering that can be used to extrapolate from early results gained in any type of weathering exposure.  The calculations include physical and chemical materials' characteristics, the initial state of the coating, and parameters describing the environment.  Predicted trends for gloss, toughness and other properties provide a close match to experimental data.

Everyone invite your co-workers to join us for this meeting and so we can have a very high attendance!

We held the Texas Hold'em Poker Tournament on Friday, February 27, 2009 at the Park Tavern in St. Louis Park.  Congratulations to Peggy Mittlesteadt for winning the tournament.  Full results from the tournament as well as pictures can be found here.  Thanks to Jim Loeffler and Elaine Anderson for organizing this fun event.
