NWSCT Newsletter and November 2010 Meeting Reminder Our October meeting was held on the 19th and was a lunch meeting at Valspar R&D. Ryan Alleman from Lehigh Technologies presented a very informative talk on "Fine Rubber Powders from End of Life Tires." 15 members were in attendance. Our November meeting will be an afternoon meeting on Tuesday, November 9th, 2010 at Cortec Corporation (4119 White Bear Parkway, St Paul, MN 55110). The cost of this meeting will be $15 per person if paid on our website using PayPal by Friday, November 5th and $20 if paid thereafter. Just follow the link to register and pay for the meeting (Monthly Meeting Registration). Please contact Rob Laubscher via email rlaubscher@paints.com or phone (763-424-2044) if you plan to attend the meeting and are not going to pay via PayPal so that we can get an accurate head count. An early dinner (salad, pizza and refreshments) is included with your fee and will follow Frank's talk. This month's talk will feature Frank Huskey from KaMin LLC. The topic of his talk will be "Value Through Better Engineering." A unique, calcined, kaolin clay is engineered differently so that binder demand is minimized allowing the formulator to remove expensive binder from their formulation without sacrificing coating properties. Replacing a conventional, high oil absorption calcined clay with a properly engineered pigment having a lower binder demand will effectively increase the Critical Pigment Volume Concentration (CPVC). To compensate for the increase in CPVC the formulator can remove some binder from their formulation without having a negative impact on coating performance. The result is a coating formulation that has the same performance at a reduced formulation cost. Frank joined Kamin in July 2008 in the capacity of Technical Service Manager for industrial specialty applications. He earned a BS in Biology from Georgia College and State University and has worked in the kaolin industry for the past twenty years.
