NWSCT October 2011 Newsletter

The first meeting of the 2011/2012 NWSCT year was held on October 11th at Valspar. Dante Battocchi, Associate Director, from the Center for Surface Protection at North Dakota State University presented and discussed the "Center for Surface Protection, Corrosion and Coatings at NDSU." The talk featured the center's organization and capabilities as well as a collection of results from projects they have conducted with various private sector partners. For more information Click Here.

The Novemeber meeting will be held at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, November 8th at Cortec Corporation (Map It). The cost of the meeting is $15 per person which will include a light lunch/dinner. If you are interested in attending the meeting please register and pay via PayPal on the NWSCT website (Monthly Meeting Registration) by Friday, November 4th so that we can get an accurate head count. If you are interested in attending the meeting but will not be paying via PayPal please contact Chris Adams via email christopher.adams@tennantco.com or phone (763-540-1200) by Friday, November 4th.

This talk will feature Chandra Chinna, Technical Manager with Picassian Polymers. Chandra will share with us an update on the subject of polycarbodiimide crosslinkers whose use as a general-purpose crosslinker in many end use areas is enjoying a renaissance. He will address recent developments in understanding carbodiimide chemistry.

Mr. Chandra Chinna, Technical Manager for Picassian Polymers, a unit of Stahl Holdings, has a MS degree in Polymer Engineering and Chemistry from Polymer Institute, University of Detroit. His thesis work there concerned developing novel polymers for photorefractive applications. He has fifteen years of R&D experience in the chemical industry. In the course of his career he has managed research and product development groups directed at a wide variety of markets including adhesives, paints, and coatings for a variety of different industries. Stahl started out making and selling finishes for all types of leather and is a world leader in leather finishing. Picassian Polymers, which is a resin division of Stahl, sells urethane, acrylic and carbodiimide polymers and crosslinkers.

ABSTRACT
Polycarbodiimide Crosslinkers

Water dispersible polycarbodiimide crosslinkers have been around for many years as crosslinkers for aqueous polyurethane and polyacrylate based coatings. Though it is generally assumed that polycarbodiimides function as crosslinkers by reacting with polymer-bound carboxylic acid functionality, just as do polyaziridines, the early generations of water dispersible polycarbodiimide crosslinkers, touted as polyaziridine replacements, failed to fulfill the high expectations that awaited them. Multifunctional polycarbodiimides that later appeared represented a great step forward by virtue of their ability to crosslink not only through reaction with carboxylic acid groups but also to simultaneously cure to form what is best described as an interpenetrating network independent of any direct reaction with the polymer binders, but these contained solvent. The latest development has been to produce fully aqueous and solvent-free polycarbodiimide crosslinkers for aqueous coatings. This paper will explore the chemistry and crosslinking behavior of this interesting and increasingly more important class of safe and environmentally friendly crosslinkers.
